The Relevant Irrelevant 08:38 - 23 Sep 2003 | comments (0)

On September 8th Warren Zevon died in his sleep. The result of terminal lung cancer. I do not own any of his music, but watching his reaction over the last year to his (mis)diagnosis of "death within six months" made me a fan. The typical allusions to battle and fighting and resisting do not fit. He transcended that approach and instead attempted to make the suffering irrelevant. If life was coming to an end early, Warren Zevon would just have to squeeze the rest of his experience in. For all the power and excitement and dominance one might feel at the superhero putting it to the bad guy, the military vanquishing the enemy, karma catching up to the bully; it pales in comparison to the lightness of watching someone put suffering in its place. It is too late to watch this song writer do it in real time, but if you have a chance, read the How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The "Who's" get it right.

Where might you hear a song by Warren Zevon? Or any number of artists' songs that do not make it on the radio much. That would be listener supported Radio Paradise. Musical tastes vary, but this net radio cuts a very wide path and you will hear good songs, many for the first time. They have listener comments with reaction to both Johnny Cash and Warren Zevon. It was there I found this nice picture of Cash thanking the recording industry. Maybe the P2P movement should adopt it, although they really don't need to. They have made the RIAA irrelevant.
